3-Day Walk for the Cure

Today’s Friday Lite – a 60-Mile Walk

I can’t believe it’s finally here – the Susan G. Komen 3-Day, 60 Mile Walk for Breast Cancer.

You are probably wondering how a sane person is actually excited about walking 60 miles.

San Diego Event

Everyone knows San Diego for its sunny weather and 70 miles of beautiful beaches. What visitors may not know is the heart of the community.

For over seven years, San Diego has hosted the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk for the Cure. It is the last city on a year-long event for the 3-Day, 60 Mile Walk that raises money for research on breast cancer.

On November 19, 2010, I participate in my 7th 3-Day Walk, all of them in San Diego.

The support from this city is unmatched.

  • There is the father in his yellow smiley pajama bottoms with his daughter, “Little Grin,” handing out smiley pins to walkers
  • There are the huge crowds offering candy, stickers, colored beads and handmade pins
  • There is the lone, 90-year-old breast cancer survivor, thanking every walker that passes in front of her house
  • As the walkers round Balboa Park, a group of 10-year-old girls serenade the walkers with “You are so beautiful”

Many of the walkers come to San Diego for its great weather. They leave with so much more.

Stay Tuned

There will be stories to tell and memories to share, There always is. For now, please pray to the No Blisters gods for me – and my Fight Like A Girl teammates.

Thank you to all my friends and family – and all my contributors who generously donated so I could participate in this great event.

Pink Glove Dance Goes Coast to Coast

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Last month I shared the fun Pink Glove Dance video created by Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, Oregon for breast cancer awareness.

Well, there’s a new Pink Glove Dance and it has gone coast to coast.

From Times Square to the Golden Gate Bridge, health care workers donned the pink gloves.

Great additions to this year’s video are breast cancer survivors shaking their booty in celebration.

But, first — a word from our sponsors.

Share the Promise

Nancy G. Brinker made a promise to her sister, Susan G. Komen, who was dying from breast cancer. We share the promise in the fight against breast cancer.

The Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure has a 3-Day, 60 Mile Walk for Breast Cancer in 15 cities.

So far, the event has been held in 8 cities and the last event occurs in San Diego – the weekend before Thanksgiving.

This will be my 7th year participating in the San Diego Walk. My sister, Terry, is a 10+ year survivor.

We have to raise a minimum of $2,300 to walk. I am $455 short.

  • If you would like to donate – any small amount – click on the 3-Day button in the right sidebar
  • I am also wearing names of loved ones affected by cancer or those lost to cancer
  • Send me their names and I will be honored to wear them

Now, enjoy the sequel to the Pink Glove Dance!

Thank You to All My Contributors

Thank you to all who contributed to my fundraising. I appreciate it — a lot.

It’s Friday so let’s have some Pink Glove Dance Friday fun.

It has been a busy, tough week of work. I hope you don’t mind if I depart from my business blog for a bit of fun.

Fun and My Favorite Cause

Okay, I know October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, but then I always like going against the norm.

This is one of my favorite fun videos. It was created by Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, Oregon for breast cancer awareness.

I dare you not to smile.

P.S. I am participating in my 7th Susan G. Komen, 3-Day, 60-mile Walk for Breast Cancer. I am $705 short of the minimum needed to participate in the Walk.

If you can donate – any small amount – I would appreciate it. Just click on the 3-Day Donate button in the right sidebar.

Thank you and I hope you smile today.

Be Cool-Support 3-Day Breast Cancer Walk

September 11, 2010 by Cathy Miller Leave a Comment

Feel the Excitement

We are on the “get serious” side of training for the 3-Day Breast Cancer Walk. Here is where it’s at:

  • Weather – it is considerably cooler – makes for great training walks
  • Toe injury – the nail is now the most beautiful color of purple – I keep thinking I forgot to polish the other toenails – too bad it didn’t turn pink
  • Donations – I have $775 left to raise to meet the minimum to walk-close but no cigar-yet
  • Tickets – I bought my airline tickets-I have faith that you will help me raise the minimum to walk
  • House – our team has rented a house in Mission Bay-of course, we’ll spend more time outside it-walking and walking and walking
  • Team – I cannot wait to see my Fight Like A Girl team who are from the Bay Area in CA, Chicago, IL and Salt Lake City, UT – and me – now from Boise, ID – our own little map of the U.S.

I am so excited. It is getting close and very real. Ever hear of someone getting so excited about walking 60 miles in 3 days? If you have ever done the 3-Day Walk, you understand. The 3-Day is life-changing

  • The 3-Day shows you how strong you really are
  • The 3-Day celebrates life, the human spirit and all that is important in life
  • The 3-Day is about hope, love, and support

Please help me participate for the 7th time in this great event.

I am hoping some of my former contributors will help even if we no longer do business together -although I am always available for ALL your business writing needs .

So,please, help if you can. Thank you to my contributors, many who are repeat contributors! Please ask others if they can help, too.

You can click on the Donate button on the 3-Day picture in the sidebar. You can access the same button on my business blog Simply stated business .

3 Power Lessons From the 3-Day Walk

August 21, 2010 by Cathy Miller Leave a Comment

November marks my 7th year as a walker in the 3-Day, 60-mile walk for breast cancer.

Pardon the pun, but I just can’t seem to walk away.

There are so many lessons I have learned from my participation. Here are just a few.

1. The Power of Community

Long before the dawn of social media, the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure knew all about building a community.

What started out as one sister’s promise to her sister who was dying from breast cancer, has become a global community of breast cancer survivors and supporters, all fighting for a cure.

The power of community is evident in this grassroots campaign that spread to over 50 countries around the world.

Walking the Walk

On the 3-Day event, I can tell you nothing is more gratifying than the support of the local community.

Just when we found the 1st day high-step slowed to a 2nd day plodding, we rounded a corner and saw and heard a crowd of people cheering, waving signs, giving out candy, and all kinds of silly treats.

On the last day I got tears in my eyes as a group of 7 to 9-year-old girls sang, “You are so beautiful.”

How could anyone walk away from this special community?

2. The Power of Perseverance

The perseverance to walk 60 miles is nothing compared to the perseverance of someone battling cancer.

I take my inspiration from my sister, Terry, a 10-year breast cancer survivor and the three survivors on our Fight Like A Girl team.

Like most people in life, I have had my challenges. Starting my own business has not been easy, but I like to think my multiple years participating in the 3-Day has given me the perseverance to keep at it.

3. The Power of the Individual

I am not sure even Nancy G. Brinker could have predicted the power that evolved from her promise to her sister, Susan G. Komen. She showed one person really can make a difference.

I have had horrible blisters, lost 3 toenails (one twice) and more than once wondered if I could finish the 60 miles.  But, with the power of the community, especially my team, and the power of perseverance and my individual strength, I succeeded.

The 3-Day, 60-mile walk for breast cancer has given me many power lessons in life and for my business.

I cannot wait for number 7.
