As many of you know, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

I’m starting it off in style as my contributors came through once again to help me raise the minimum required to walk.

I’m ready for my 9th 3-Day Walk for the Cure in San Diego next month.

• And I’ve already signed up for 2013
• After all, it will be the 10th anniversary of our Fight Like A Girl team

Why We Walk

Each year I wear the names of survivors and loved ones who lost their battle to cancer.

• Some are family
• Many are names from contributors
• All are remembered

As you might imagine, walking 60 miles in 3 Days takes a toll on the feet.

For my first three Walks, I tried every type of shoes and sock combination – but with the same result.

• Halfway through the Walk – happy feet
• 2nd half of the Walk – blisters and more blisters
• And a lost toenail or two

In 2006, I discovered MBTs.

Mighty Blessed Toes

MBT is short for Masai Barefoot Technology. It’s the funny-looking shoes with the curved bottom, and existed before Skechers Shape-Ups found Kim Kardashian.

I don’t know why I let the shoe salesperson talk me into the closed shoes. I went in for the sandals.

• The closed shoes eliminated the blisters
• I still lost my big toenail – too much pavement pounding

In 2007, I purchased MBT sandals and happy feet were born.

• No blisters
• No lost toenails
• 3-Day bliss

So, what did MBT do? They discontinued or changed the model of my shoes.

There is a similar version in a men’s style, but I could not find a size small enough to fit my needs. Generally, on the 3-Day, you get shoes a size larger since your feet swell. Too much information?

• I tried a different MBT model
• It did not give me the support I needed
• I was very sad

I tried other walking sandals. I was left moaning ~

Hallelujah!

A few weeks ago, I found my MBT sandals in a men’s size that would work for me.

I bought two pair.

• And they were on sale!
• The foot gods are smiling
• And I have happy feet once again

3-Day #9 Here I Come

My happy feet are rejoicing as they prepare for my 9th 3-Day Walk.

I have September and October to raise at least $473 to reach the $2,300 minimum we are required to raise.

Training is probably not an accurate description.

One of the many blessings from the 3-Day Walk for the Cure is my regular 5-6 mile walks.

But, with slightly over 90 days until my 9th Walk, I consider myself in training mode. And this summer has been particularly challenging.

Channeling Ratso Rizzo

Walking in Boise instead of San Diego (where I lived for 20+ years) is definitely different.

• There are more four-legged cheerleaders along the route
• The summer heat is a schedule-breaker
• There is a lot less traffic

You would think that last point makes for a walk in the park environment.

For the most part, that’s true. But, I still find myself channeling Ratso Rizzo.

“Hey, I’m walking here.”

I’m not sure if it’s so unexpected to find someone walking along that route, but I have been almost hit – twice – in the middle of the same crosswalk.

I know what you’re thinking. Find a different route.

It’s less about the route and more about the cell phones plastered to the drivers’ ears. Hmm, maybe Boise isn’t so different from San Diego.

If the Heat Doesn’t Kill You

Remember that line in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid? (must be movie day)

• Sundance and Butch are preparing to leap from a high cliff into a river
• Sundance says: I can’t swim
• Butch replies: Are you crazy? The fall will probably kill you.

That pretty much sums up this summer.

• Triple-digit heat has me scurrying for cooler times of the day
• I’ve considered a miner’s hat with a light for 4 A.M. walks
• Then multiple fires suffocated the air in the Boise valley

The air quality has me yelling, “Uncle.” With a history of asthma, the polluted air knocks me out.

The good news is I was back on the route yesterday.

Tick-Tock

I cannot believe there’s only 90 days (okay, 92) until I meet up with my Fight Like A Girl teammates for another 3-Day Walk for the Cure.

I return to my beloved San Diego and 3 days, 60 miles of hills and ocean walks. Walk on!

There’s a new rule this year.

• We have to raise the minimum before we can check in
• We used to have a month after the Walk to hit the $2,300 minimum
• So far, I’ve raised $1,551

That leaves $749 – about $8/day. If you can donate any amount, I would be very grateful.

The 3-Day Walk for the Cure has certainly been a journey.

If I could ever find time away from my business, I’d finish my book about the experience.

Rocking the Blues

In 2003 when I participated in my first 3-Day Walk, our shirts  were blue – a hangover from the Avon Walks, I suspect.

The sidebar picture is from 2006, the last year we had the blue shirts. Of course, breast cancer survivors always receive pink shirts.

Personally, I prefer the blue shirts over our present-day shirts.

In the Black

In 2007, a new look and a new logo arrived on scene.

Our shirts faded from blue to white with the black and pink logo.

Well, sort of – hard to see for all the beads.

June Was Busting Out All Over

Fast forward to 2012, and I am gearing up for my 9th 3-Day Walk for the Cure.

My Fight Like A Girl teammates and I return to my beloved San Diego in November.

I sent my first request (okay, begging) for donations in June. Once again, we have to raise a minimum of $2,300 to participate.

My contributors responded with a huge bang in time for the 4th of July – thank you, thank you, thank you!

Training has been going well, except the triple-digit heat is making it challenging to find a time during the day where I don’t melt my walking sandals.

Not since Rocky Balboa has one seen so many sequels. This one is called Old Lady Walking.

That’s right – it’s that time of year again – preparing for the 3-Day Walk for the Cure.

• It will be my 9th 3-Day Walk of 60 Miles
• Once more, it takes place in November
• It’s in San Diego, my beloved former home

And, I’m back with my Fight Like A Girl team.

Temporary Tattoo

This blog, my business blog, and my health care blog are all sporting a new temporary tattoo.

It’s a picture of some of my teammates and me that links to my 3-Day Personal Page. There you are welcomed to donate to keep this old lady walking.

• The good news is the amount we need to raise stayed the same
• The bad news is it’s $2,300
• A new twist this year is the whole amount must be raised by the Walk

If not – you cannot participate.

They used to give us a month after the event to finish up fundraising, but not anymore.

So, I am appreciative of anything you can do to help.

Let’s Get Serious

You know I mean business when I stop drinking my wine.

June 1st marked my official wine stoppage until the Walk. I don’t even give up wine for Lent.

But, it’s the least I can do in honor of all the women and men who have been affected by cancer.

• I walk for my sister, Terry, a 10+ year breast cancer survivor
• I walk for my Aunt Mitzi who lost her battle with lung cancer
• I walk for and with my 3 teammates who are breast cancer survivors

And I walk for all those affected by cancer.

The recent announcement of Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts’ latest battle only brings more resolve to once more walk 60 miles in 3 days.
