How We Made Tahoe Pink

October 13, 2013 by Cathy Miller Leave a Comment

As some of you know, my Fight Like A Girl team, who walk in the 3-Day Walk for the Cure, celebrated out 10-year anniversary.

We celebrated in style at one of our teammate’s beautiful home in Lake Tahoe.

We had a mission to Make Tahoe Pink.

The short video is that story.

Idaho Statesman Goes Pink

October 2, 2013 by Cathy Miller 8 Comments

ID Statesman Front PageHow cool is this?

The Boise newspaper has gone pink.

This morning as I walked out to get the paper, I knew it was going to be a bit different.

Each year, in recognition of October Breast Cancer Awareness, the Idaho Statesman goes pink.

  • From cover to cover, the pages are all pink
  • The paper invited stories from readers touched by breast cancer

So, I decided to send in my own.

Fight Like A Girl – For All

Here is a picture of my story.

FLAG-For AllYou can read the story online at the Idaho Statesman.

As is the way with stories about breast cancer, my submission was next to a breast cancer survivor’s story who encouraged women to fight like a girl.

The community of survivors, family, supporters and those we lost, unites us in a battle we will never give up.

  • What stories do you have to share?
  • How are you recognizing October as breast cancer awareness month?

My Fight Like A Girl teammates and I are celebrating our 10th anniversary as a team.

And what better way to do that than walking 60 miles in the 3-Day Walk for the Cure in November in beautiful San Diego?

Walk on.

October Signals the Start of Groveling

October 1, 2013 by Cathy Miller 2 Comments

FLAG Anniv LogoOctober is breast cancer awareness month.

What better time to kick my 3-Day groveling into high gear?

If you are new to this blog, allow me to catch you up.

The Start of a Journey

Over 12 years ago, I received a call from my mom.

I was living in San Diego at the time. Mom called to tell me my older sister, Terry, had been diagnosed with breast cancer.

She did not want to worry us so she did not tell our mom until after the surgery and after the start of her chemotherapy.

The news was a kick in the rear. I had been saying for years that I wanted to walk in the 60-Mile 3-Day Walk for the Cure. Now, I had no excuses.

So began one of the most incredible journeys of my life.

Can’t Walk Away

On the very first Walk, I met three women who later would become part of a team of incredible women, all dedicated to kicking cancer to the curb.

Two of them (Sue and Penny) are breast cancer survivors and walked every walk – even two in one year. Incredible.

A third survivor, Martina, joined us several years ago.

  • Our team has grown to 14 women
  • 2013 marks the 10th anniversary of our Fight Like A Girl team

I never planned to walk beyond that first year. But, then each Fight Like A Girl teammate walked right into my heart. I am so blessed to have them in my life.

Team History

For a little fun, the attached video illustrates the connection of our Fight Like A Girl team.

Do you know the game Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon?

The theory is that everyone is connected to actor, Kevin Bacon, by no more than six degrees of connection.

This video is our Fight Like A Girl version.

Groveling Alert

As a walker, I have to raise a minimum of $2,300 to participate in my 10th Walk.

I am so close.

  • $2,055 raised so far
  • $245 left to reach minimum

If you can help in any small way, click on my 3-Day picture in the sidebar or go to my personal donation page.

I want to thank all my contributors. Many of them have stuck with me over all 10 years.

You, too, hold a special place in my heart. Walk on.

Thank You Contributors!

Walking Hazards of Every Kind

September 5, 2013 by Cathy Miller 8 Comments

Sunrise-Boise Training
Sunrise-Boise Training

What started out as training for the 3-Day, 60-Mile Walk for the Cure has turned into a routine.

Five to seven days a week, I walk five to six miles each day.

Sounds good, right?

I thought so, too, but there seems to be a conspiracy against my walks.

Record-Breaking

I wish I could say the record-breaking is my pace.

But, instead it’s the heat – 70 days of 90 degrees or more.

I – HATE – HEAT.

Maybe it was too many years in southern California (mostly San Diego). For nearly 20 years, the farthest I lived from the ocean was three blocks.

Temperatures in the 70s are my idea of nirvana.

My walks have been getting earlier and earlier in an effort to beat the heat. I’ve missed more days this year than I have in awhile. Bummer.

Don't believe that innocent look
Don’t believe that innocent look

Sheep’s Clothing

I don’t know when I started resembling a sheep.

On three separate occasions (and three dogs), I have been attacked by a sheep-herding border collie.

The snarling, snapping surveyors of sheep circled me, one throwing his body against my leg. It even snapped at its young owner who tried to grab him before it took a chunk out of me.

I-LOVE-DOGS.

But, I now find myself freezing when I hear the sound of a barking dog on one of my walks.

Being Invisible

That’s the only explanation I can come up with.

How else could someone NOT see me when I am in the middle of a crosswalk? Crossing with the light.

Much of my route is in less traveled areas. Yet, the one area where I must disappear is at a major intersection with a working stoplight.

More than once, I ran to get out of the path of a car.

I – HATE – RUNNING.

So, I guess I have to figure out how to remove th cloak of invisibility.

Fall For The Future

With a little more than two months until my 10th 3-Day Walk for the Cure, it’s time to step it up.

Fortunately, that coincides with the approach of fall.

  • The hope is for cooler weather
  • With dogs behind gates and doors
  • And drivers not blinded by light

Isn’t walking supposed to be good for you? Walk on.

A huge thank-you to all my contributors!

I have a bit over $500 left to raise on the $2,300 required to walk. If you can help, I would appreciate it.
