Cancer News Update: January 2014

January 15, 2014 by Cathy Miller Leave a Comment

bigstock-Cancer-Awareness-Ribbons-2420200I plan on updating this category about once a month.

I’ll provide a brief summary of the news story with links to the press release or article.

Please let me know in Comments if you find the information helpful and what kind of news you would like included in future updates.

Thank you.

January 2014

Ovarian Cancer Biomarker Discovery

Researchers at Case Western Reserve identified a biomarker that may help predict treatment response in ovarian cancer.

Researchers explained that the biomarker may give clues as to which women would respond well to chemotherapy and which would have a high risk for recurrence. That information could be very helpful in treatment decisions.

Read the press release for more information.

Stopping Breast Cancer Metastasis

The spread of cancer from one body site to other parts of the body is known as metastasis.

Researchers at Huntsman Cancer Institute in Utah uncovered a cellular mechanism that drives the spread of breast cancer to other parts of the body. The good news is they also discovered a therapy which blocks the mechanism.

Read the press release for more information.

U.S. Cancer Deaths Down Twenty Percent

The American Cancer Society reported some good news. Between 1991 and 2010, the cancer death rate for men and women combined fell 20 percent. The rate of colon cancer has declined rapidly in recently years, attributed in part to increased colonoscopy screenings.

The complete study, Cancer Studies 2014, is available in n the American Cancer Society’s journal CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians.

The American Cancer Society also updated its site with general information about the cancer study and statistics.

Cancer: Don’t You Think Enough is Enough?

January 14, 2014 by Cathy Miller Leave a Comment

bigstock-Hold-on-Stop-gesture-showed-b-44456056Despite tremendous advances in the treatment of cancer, the word still strikes fear in the heart of most people.

  • I know my heart skipped a beat when I was diagnosed with skin cancer
  • Even though I felt somewhat like an impostor

My form of cancer (basal cell carcinoma) is the most common and rarely spreads.

Still, I found myself not listening beyond the word cancer when my doctor’s office called with the diagnosis.

Do you ever feel like cancer is inevitable?

A Long History

Cancer has  a long history.

The mummies of ancient Egypt revealed evidence of cancer. It has been over 20 years since Jimmy Valvano’s stirring ESPY speech.

The World Cancer Research Fund International identifies the 5 most common cancers worldwide.

  1. Lung
  2. Breast
  3. Bowel
  4. Stomach
  5. Prostate

The site shares a projection of 21 million cancer cases by the year 2030.

Makes you want to say ~

Enough is enough.

A favorite author of mine sets her stories in the future, the first in 2058 when you can receive anti-cancer injections. Will we see that day before 2058? I hope so.

In the meantime, we continue to walk, run, raise money and awareness for research.

Hopefully, one day soon enough will be enough.

Walk on.

Pictorial Proof of 3-Day Walk for the Cure

December 6, 2013 by Cathy Miller 3 Comments

FLAG Anniv LogoWho knew that walking 60 miles in 3 days would get easier?

  • Wait.
  • Did I say that?
  • The girl who used to drag her feet at signing up for another year?

Yep, that was me.

Now, I am already signed up for 2014.

Cannot Walk Away

I cannot believe 2013 marked the 10th anniversary of our Fight Like A Girl team’s participation in the 3-Day Walk for the Cure.

My, how time flies.

I know I never looked beyond that first 60 miles, yet here I am – a proud member of the 600 Mile Club.

Great name, huh? Thank teammate (and survivor), Martina, for that brilliant name.

None of this would be possible without the support of our contributors who generously donate to keep this old lady walking.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I hope you enjoy the brief video of our 10th anniversary Walk.

See you next year!

Another 60 Miles Under the Feet

The 600 Mile Club-10 years of walking
The 600 Mile Club-10 years of walking

This is one time the event lived up to the hype.

My Fight Like A Girl teammates and I celebrated the 10-year anniversary of our team’s participation in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk for the Cure.

  • We had a 10-year reunion in beautiful Lake Tahoe
  • 6 of 14 team members walked another 60 miles in San Diego

All in all, our celebration was a lot of fun.

Why We Walk

After so many years of participation, it is easy for the newness to wear off.

  • The opening ceremony has been done before
  • All the stickers and commemorative pins have been worn

Just when you think you may be taking the event for granted, the true meaning is restored.

  • You meet someone who is walking for the first time
  • That walker shares a story of loss or fear of what’s to come
  • You link arms with teammates who walked into your heart

I cannot imagine my life without this event.

It has shown me courage, strength, and the love of sharing joy, grief, and most of all hope. With my 62nd birthday fast approaching, I once again believe in the human spirit.

We can do anything we want in life. We only need to believe we can.

  • Take one step at a time
  • Climb hills without fear
  • Embrace the love of a special team

With Thanksgiving around the corner, I have much to be thankful for.

The 3-Day Walk for the Cure reminds me of that each and every year.

Walk on.

A Decade of Miles

November 15, 2013 by Cathy Miller Leave a Comment

FLAG Anniv LogoWhen this posts, my Fight Like A Girl teammates and I will be on Day One of our next 60-mile, 3-Day journey.

We celebrate our 10th anniversary as a team, and look forward to the next decade.

Well, at least as long as this 60+ year-old body will support me.

I have 20 years on many of my teammates and *shudder* 40 years on others.

Frightening when you think I could be their grandmother.

But, young, old, male, female, the 3-Day Walk for the Cure is an event for all.

Thank you again to all my contributors – you rock!

Think blissful, blister-free 3 days of walking, laughing, sharing in an event I cannot walk away from.
